In November 2008, NorthStar leased 14 acres of land from the Omaha Home for Boys on the eastern part of their campus near 48th & Ames Avenue. This land is home to the Hitchcock High Ropes Challenge Course, located at the southern edge of the leased land and constructed in June 2010. Through Outward Bound Omaha, NorthStar has been supporting pilot programming on the high ropes course, focusing on teambuilding, leadership, and service skills development.
Ensuring the continued investment in the neighborhood, NorthStar sought to acquire several multi-unit buildings that had been condemned and unmaintained, near 48th & Sahler streets. In August 2008, NorthStar began the long process of seeking to purchase, for demolition, condemned properties within this area.
Demolition Progress
September 2010: Demolition began on eight of the nine properties near 48th & Sahler Street.
October 2010: Demoltion of the eight vacant and condemned properties in the 48th & Sahler area has been completed! The only unit that will remain standing, 4842 Sprague Street high-rise, has been gutted and awaits potential future redevelopment.
December 2010: NorthStar officially closed on the property that contained the eight condemned properties and the high-rise on Sprague Street. The now bare land totals approx. 2.37 acres and a long-rage plan for utilization of the land and high-rise will be developed.
